I'm totally obsessed with Wax Melts, they bring back all those feel-good vibes and delicious scents. But guess what? When I dug deep into the world of store-bought wax melts, I discovered a whole bunch of toxic chemicals lurking inside!


Talk about a major buzzkill!


So, being the crafty genius that I am, I decided to take matters into my own hands and whip up my own batch! But hold up, I needed to track down some squeaky clean ingredients and trustworthy suppliers first.


After what felt like a gazillion hours of intense detective work, I stumbled upon Candle Science! Everything I use in my creations are straight from Candle Science because they're basically the holy grail of clean products.


Trust me, my wax melts are the real deal when it comes to safe home fragrances. I've got the inside scoop, and I'm spilling the beans because your nose deserves nothing but the best!


WHAT are FRAGRANCE OILS?

Fragrance oils are concentrated liquid scents used to add aromas to a vast array of products like candles, soaps, perfumes, cosmetics, lotions, detergents, household cleaners, and more. Not all fragrance oils are created equal, but at Candle Science They have developed and curated some of the very best.


Fragrance oil ingredients

So what are fragrance oils made of? Candle Science fragrance oils are a combination of natural essential oils, synthetic aroma chemicals, solvents, and diluents.

While fragrance oils contain natural components like essential oils, they are considered synthetic. However, the beauty of working with synthetic fragrance oils is that they are formulated to be safe in final products and perform consistently (unlike essential oils that can, in some cases, experience fragrance shifts, especially when burned in candles or Tarts aka Melts.)

Essential oils

Essential oils are pure liquids containing aroma compounds that are removed from the natural materials of plants like seeds, flowers, leaves, roots, and stems or bark of plants through methods like steam distillation, expression (like cold pressing), or extraction. Essential oils harness the distinctive essence, or scent, of the plant it was made from and are frequently used in perfumes, flavorings, and medicines.

*Most of the fragrance oils CS carries are infused with essential oils and they are listed on each fragrance's product page.

The only way to naturally scent candles and other products is with essential oils.


Aroma chemicals

Because essential oils are not available for every scent we'd like to use, Candle Science draws on synthetic aromas that come in powder or liquid form.

They use these concentrated compounds when no essential oil, or naturally occurring scent, is available—like in Chocolate Fudge or Blueberry Cheesecake fragrances.


Solvents and diluents

Solvents are dissolving agents. Diluents are diluting substances.

When a synthetic aroma chemical is in powder form, a solvent is required to convert it to a liquid for use in fragrance oil. Solvents help the components of a fragrance burn more easily, blend better, improve fragrance throw, and increase fragrance longevity.

If an essential oil is in a highly concentrated form, a diluent is required to thin it so that it will remain suspended in the liquid fragrance oil.

Some diluents are used to "cut" fragrance oils after they are produced so that an expensive fragrance oil can be sold at a lower price with a weaker strength.

Once CandleScience fragrances are developed, they are NEVER diluted or "cut" in any way.


What about phthalates and other hazardous chemicals?

As of August 2019, 100% of Candle Science fragrance oils are formulated without phthalates. They've always adhered to the strict RIFM (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials) standard regarding fragrance safety.

But they also think these safety standards could go even further, and in July 2020, they announced CandleScience Clean Scents™ initiative. 


CandleScience Clean Scents™ are fragrance oils that avoid carcinogens, toxins, and other hazardous chemicals commonly found in fragrance oils.

While their entire line of fragrance oils are non-toxic, CandleScience Clean Scents gives me the peace of mind of working with the safest supplies available.

by also avoiding these 5 main hazard groups:


Carcinogens: These are materials known or thought to cause cancer. 


Mutagens: Materials that change the DNA of a cell, harming the cell and causing diseases like cancer. 


Reproductive toxins: Toxins that adversely affect reproductive organs and increase the risk of birth defects. 


Organ toxins: These are toxins that can cause adverse effects or disease within specific bodily organs. 


Acute toxins: Toxins that can cause adverse effects from a single exposure. Generally, this would be accidental exposure like spillage or ingestion.

ABOUT BUYING FRAGRANCES FROM OTHER SUPPLIERS.....


How can you learn about the safety of a fragrance if you're not buying a CandleScience Clean Scent™?


  • Look at the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) that must be provided by the supplier for each fragrance.

  • Note the OSHA/GHS pictograms on the top of the SDS. The Health Hazards or “exploding chest” pictogram signifies one or more of the hazard groups listed above. Additional pictograms you might encounter are referenced below.


Pictograms to Avoid:


Skull and Crossbones

The Skull and Crossbones pictogram is the one to be most concerned about. It indicates the presence of acute toxins that can be fatal.







Health Hazards

The Health Hazard pictogram indicates the presence of an ingredient that may cause, or is suspected of causing, serious health effects.






Corrosion

Indicate ingredients that may cause corrosive damage to metals, skin, or eyes.









Acceptable Pictograms:

Hazard

Indicates an ingredient that may cause irritation or allergic response in those allergic to the ingredient. These effects are temporary and not severe, representing a much lower risk than fragrances that carry the pictograms above.



  • When shopping for fragrances, look carefully at the SDS sheets provided by the fragrance manufacturer or supplier. If the SDS sheets from a supplier all seem to contain the same information, this can be a red flag. Suppliers are required to provide accurate SDS sheets for every fragrance they sell.  If you notice seemingly identical SDS sheets, we encourage you to ask that supplier more questions before purchasing.
